Interested in Joining the Medical Reserve Corps ?

The Virginia Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a force of dedicated volunteers who stand ready to support the community in the event of a public health emergency. Each of the 31 local MRC units is comprised of teams of medical and public health professionals who, along with interested community members, volunteer their skills, expertise and time to support ongoing public health initiatives and assist during emergencies throughout Virginia.

Virginia MRC units participate in a variety of activities

o H1N1 Flu Pandemic, 2009-2010: Over 2,000 VA MRC volunteers staffed vaccination clinics, public information inquiry phone lines and emergency operation centers.   The total value of volunteer efforts for H1N1 was over $825,000!

o Health Screenings: VA MRC volunteers continue to provide free health screenings at senior living residences, homeless shelters and community events.

o Medical Surge:  VA MRC units augment hospital and emergency medical service operations by staffing basic and advanced life support tents at large community events such as the Battle of Bull Run in Manassas and the Blue Angels Air Show in Lynchburg.

o Seasonal Flu Vaccinations:  Yearly, VA MRC volunteers support school and community based seasonal flu vaccination clinics for at risk populations.

o Tornado Response:  Eastern region MRC volunteers provided tetanus shots, health information and first aid to community members after the 2008 Tornados in Suffolk.

o Rabies & Disaster Preparedness Clinic: Eastern region MRC volunteers provided free rabies vaccinations to animals and emergency preparedness education to community members.

You can choose to support daily public health activities, volunteer during emergencies – or both. We understand that your work and personal commitments will determine your availability. Required training is offered in a classroom setting, via CD ROM, through self-guided study materials and online. It’s our goal for you to be trained and ready when you’re needed.
